The Sleep Council has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of a good bed and a supportive, comfortable mattress. At Raft we’re fully on board...
‘National Bed Month? They have a month for everything these days!’ we hear you cry.
True, but actually, there’s real merit in this one. The campaign to make March the ‘National Bed Month’ is the brainchild of the Sleep Council - the organisation dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of a good night’s sleep.
Why we sleep
Strangely, it’s only very recently that medical science has begun to understand exactly why we sleep. From an evolutionary point of view it’s a bit weird that we spend a third of our lives unconscious - a state when we’re unproductive and also vulnerable. But all animals do sleep, so it must be doing something important!
Now the latest science tells us that there’s almost no area of our short and long term health that isn’t benefited by at least seven or preferably eight hours of proper sleep every night. Refreshing sleep helps to:
promote a stronger immune system
improve your mental health
maintain a healthy heart
reduce stress levels
There’s even evidence that it can reduce the risk of serious long term conditions like Alzheimer's.
The importance of a good bed
The Sleep Council website has loads of really useful tips on getting better sleep. But one thing that they say can be overlooked is the need for a good bed and a comfortable, supportive mattress.
We couldn’t agree more - which is why we partnered with the leading mattress manufacturers Hypnos, to create an exclusive range of all handcrafted mattresses, using top quality all-natural materials like bamboo, cashmere and alpaca wool to support, insulate and cushion.
Hypnos has been run by the Keen family for generations – read more hereabout why we felt that their emphasis on craftsmanship and quality, sustainable materials fitted perfectly with the Raft ethos.
Raft's Ellery mattress by Hypnos contains wool, silk, bonded wool and alpaca.
What’s more, we’ve got a new range of upholstered beds on display on our shop floors, along with our well-known reclaimed teak beds.
So if you're in the market for a better night's sleep this National Bed Month, we might well be able to help!
